Sherlock Holmes was widely advertised and was finally released Christmas day. So is it worth watching?
In my opinion, it is definitely not worth watching and is the reason for most of my current grief. Shown in the commercials itself, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law make a dynamic duo. The dynamic duo is pretty much the only reason to watch this film.
Perhaps I walked into Sherlock Holmes with too much expectations, but as an avid fan of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, coupled with their film histories of killer performances, who wouldn’t have high expectations?
Guy Ritchie’s direction is bloody awful. The plot revolves around Sherlock Holmes and his antagonist Lord Blackwood. I’ve never had any experience with Sherlock Holmes except for a childhood cartoon series I watched, but have read that Downey Jr’s portrayal of Holmes is quite different from the stereotypical. Regardless, the film is about magic and magic is what this film lacks. While there might be a tiny handful of entertaining scenes, the film is long and drags very much. There is no super climax and Hollywood has dressed Sherlock Holmes up for a long “lucrative” franchise, and a sequel is undoubtedly in the works.
For the good reviews that this film received, were the critics literally on crack? Sherlock Holmes is a mere Hollywood toss-off or a Hollywood cash cow filled with only cheap tricks. Director Guy Ritchie must have heard that “Tricks are for kids” and Sherlock Holmes has not been advertised to children. The honey to draw the bees or cash would be Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. The two’s chemistry is perhaps the only thing that makes this film worth watching.
I would suggest skipping it or seeing it on DVD if you must.
The film was plain awful.
2.5/5
It reminded me of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull except it didn’t have all the nice action scenes.
Just plain awful. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law however, are very entertaining together. If you do see it, don’t have such high expectations and perhaps you might enjoy it.
