The Lookout was released in 2007 and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Matthew Goode, Jeff Daniels, and Isla Fisher. As a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt I had high expectations for this film.
Unfortunately the expectations fell flat. The Lookout was publicized as an action film and an action film it was not. It is a film about a bank heist and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the protagonist who is greatly handicapped due to an accident and also the “Lookout”. I thought the plot was pretty original and interesting.
Simply the film was not in my taste. It is not an Ocean 11 film. It is not a film where you’ll see some brilliant acting. And it is definitely not a happy Friday film. The Lookout is dark and depressing. Its characters are very flat, they never reach the full human capacity and stay two dimensional.
While it has garnered pleasant reviews as atypical, it is definitely different. It is not the average film, but for those who like average films, you will not enjoy this movie.
However, The Lookout is a pleasant directorial debut from Scott Frank. While the direction was shaky, the cinematography was very pleasant. There are some breathtaking scenes that make The Lookout worth watching. It is a pleasing aesthetic, but for those looking for a simple pleasant film, this isn’t for you. For people looking for something different, The Lookout is worth seeing for those really dreary days where you have nothing else to see.
