Whip It

Whip It

You know that really hot chick Drew Barrymore from Charlie’s Angels? Well the Angel made her directorial debut with Whip It starring Ellen Page.

Directorial debuts by actors (that I have seen) usually don’t go so well. I haven’t seen much, sadly, but the last one I saw was Confessions of a Dangerous Mind by George Clooney and I didn’t like it that much. But while Whip It might not stun you like Christopher Nolan’s direction in The Dark Knight, it will surely melt some teenage hearts.

Whip It stars Ellen Page as a 17 year old teenager, that resides in an unknown small town in Texas, and is on a beauty pageant leash by her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). It is a tale of growing up, and while this genre has been done over and over, it has not ever taken place in a roller derby.

Whip It features decent acting, and some gorgeous cinematography. While the film is not memorable, I believe Drew Barrymore has surely made her directorial debut with Whip It. It does what most films can’t, it makes you feel. Of course, I have no idea how it might make a male feel, but I think the modern day “hipster” teen will surely enjoy it. Fans of Juno, Paper Heart, Michael Cera, and Jesse Eisenberg will surely enjoy this film. As for growing up, ah, it is borderline Hollywood, but there is some brilliant scenes.

So if you missed it in theaters, you’ll be glad to discover it’ll be hitting stores in DVD form on January 26, 2010.

As for Drew Barrymore’s next film, I’d love to see it.

3/5

You know if you’re a hipster. And I’m not referencing the stereotype. I’m referring to the independence and educated love. Whatever that means right?
